Studying at a New Zealand University

New Zealand can boasts having 8 very reputable universities, including the University of Auckland, which is ranked as one of the top 50 universities in the world. Qualifications obtained from New Zealand universities will prove very beneficial in your future career, as English speaking graduates are in high demand throughout the world.

There are numerous undergraduate study options, from one year long certificate , two year long diploma programmes to degree programmes which are 3 to 4 years in duration. Programmes offered include but are not limited to those in the field of Commerce, Arts and Engineering. In order to gain admission into the many courses on offer, a number of requirements are needed to be fulfilled.

The main requirement is a high level of English competency. The required level of English competency is dependent on the chosen field of study, however an academic IELTS average of 6.0, or a TOEFL average score of 550+ is the general minimum.

To be admitted into an undergraduate programme students made be required to have successfully completed one full year of tertiary study in their home country.

Foundation Studies

Another option could be to undertake a year long foundation studies course, which is available at certain New Zealand universities. Admission into such courses requires a lower level of English competency (academic IELTS average score of 5.5, or TOEFL average score of between 490-530+), and enables a student to begin studying in New Zealand straight after graduating from high school, provided that their school grades are sufficiently high. The student, upon successfully completing the foundation course, is able to proceed into their chosen undergraduate studies provided they re-sit their academic IELTS or TOEFL examination and gain the minimum score required for the course.

Postgraduate Courses

All New Zealand Universities offer the possibility of postgraduate studies for those students who have successfully completed a bachelor's degree in their home country. In order to undertake postgraduate studies, a student must provide a verified education history in a subject area for which postgraduate study is offered in New Zealand, and an academic IELTS average score of at least 6.5 or a TOEFL average score of 575+. Some postgraduate courses may have a higher English competency requirement. Postgraduate courses are a minimum of two years in duration.

University fees for international students are very competitive to those in other English speaking countries. A year of foundation studies or undergraduate study will cost approximately $17,500, while a year of postgraduate study approximately $19,500.
